Pine Island Florida (in Lee County) is the largest island (17 Miles long and 2 miles wide) on the west coast of Florida, just 15-20 minutes from Cape Coral, 30 minutes from Ft. Myers and one hour from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). Pine Island's secluded, quaint and "country waterfront" atmosphere is a huge part of its charm. Fringed with mangroves rather than white sand beaches, Pine Island has escaped the concrete, blacktop and skyscrapers found in the more touristy, beachy communities.
Pine Island, Florida is home to about 8,000 people year round, and many more in the winter. It consists of five communities, Bokeelia and Pineland north of Pine Island Road, St. James City on the Southern end of the island, the Center (at the intersection of Pine Island and Stringfellow Roads) and Matlacha, an island all to itself. Little Pine Island is owned by the state, and except for a restaurant and a few houses on the Matlacha side of the island, is uninhabited and in the process of being restored to its original condition Pine Island lies between the coast of Florida and the chain of outer Islands that extend from Gasperilla to Sanibel. Bokeelia is six miles (by boat) east of the Tarpon Capital of the World, Boca Grande Pass.
Pine Island has its own elementary school (older children go to Trafalgar Middle and Mariner High Schools in Cape Coral,) an excellent branch library, a museum, a public swimming pool and tennis courts. Basic shopping needs are filled by a Winn-Dixie Supermarket, an Eckards Drug, a hardware store and several banks, as well as a full complement of individually owned businesses, including restaurants, marinas, golf courses, art galleries and gift shops.
